Winter Wishes

Today is the start of the second week of the current challenge over at Frilly and Funkie. Our host is the lovely Nancy and she has chosen Winter Wishes. Here is what Nancy has to say:

With the festivities over and the midst of winter upon us (unless you live in Australia, of course!) I thought it would be fun to share what we love most about the season. For this challenge create any type of project, layout, or card that expresses what you love about winter, whether it's sledding down a snowy hill or curling up with a book and cup of hot cocoa.

I think there is something beautiful about every season and even though Winter can be a challenge when the weather is harsh, I love it when the sun is out and the skies are blue on a frosty morning.

I started by covering a tag with book paper that I'd painted with Heavy Gesso. Then I created some hills by masking off parts of the tag and sponging Hey Pesto Fresco Finish paint over it. I then blended different shades of blue Fresco Finish paint over the top 2 thirds, working from light to dark. I then used the Wendy Vecchi Add a Stencil and the Ornate Dots Overlay stencil. I stamped some script using Cornflower Blue and Fern Green Archival ink and the little birds are stamped with black Archival ink. I used a Sharpie pen to highlight the hills and stamped some grasses along the bottom using Snowflake Fresco Finish paint.

The tree is created using the Wendy Vecchi Layered Tree stencil using black Embossing Paste.

I used my Sharpie pen again to drawer along the branches of the tree.

I mounted the tag onto some book paper that I've distressed around the edges and then used Distress inks. The bottom layer is a piece of Kraft card and I've used Wendy Vecchi's embossing paste and a Prima stencil. When it was dry I painted it with Clear Gesso, then a coat of Fresco Finish paint, before the paint was totally dry I wiped some of it back with a baby wipe.

I love this sentiment from the Artistic Outpost Midwinter stamp set. I've stamped it onto painted card, cut it up into strips and mounted them on foam pads.

I hope you get chance to join us for this challenge and share what you love about Winter. Do make sure you hop over to the Frilly and Funkie blog to check out what the rest of the team love !

  1. Beautiful tag Sue! Love the whole 'scratched' look and the embossing on the tree works brilliantly. Jenny x

  2. Fantastic tag with lots of great techniques. I love the sentiment and am going to keep that in my thoughts as I try to get through the rest of the really cold winter we are having so far. You are right though that sunny skies in winter are a good thing.

  3. What a gorgeous tag! I love that textured deep blue sky and the naked tree! What a great idea using the pen to highlight the black paste! So frosty and wonderful! big hugs :)

  4. The cloudy sky and textured grass, loving the gesso effect! Beautiful tag and what a wonderful sentiment Sue. Ruth x

  5. WONDERFUL tag! LOVE the sky and land and all the stenciling, and love the way you've mounted it on the wrinkled paper!

  6. What a FANTASTIC piece of work, Sue! I love every layer and texture you have worked into it. Great use of stencils and stamping in the background and the way you used the Layered Tree stencil is absolutely brilliant. Love the way you have your piece mounted too. LOVE this one to bits!

  7. this tag is awesome!
the texture you added is perfect!

  8. I just love this wintry tag - wonderful layers both of paper, and paste and ink.
